vampire-costumesDracula, arguably the world’s first human vampire, was conceived in a novel written by Irish writer Bram (Abraham) Stoker over 100 years ago.  In the story, Dracula is tall and thin with red eyes, pale skin and pointed fangs.  He can change into a bat or a wolf and also disappears in an evil mist.  It’s no wonder that vampire Halloween costumes are so popular.

Although presumably fictional, certain aspects of Dracula’s persona may have been based on real-life individuals.  For example, Count Dracula may actually be based on a cruel prince, Vlad Dracula, who ruled in Transylvania 500 years ago.  He was known for killing enemies by driving a sharp stake through their bodies.

Dracula’s castle may have been based on Bram Castle in Transylvania, which remains a very popular tourist attraction to this day.

The people from Transylvania were very superstitious when it came to vampires.  They believed that a corpse would become a vampire if a cat jumped over it before it was buried.  They also thought you would become a vampire if you were born with teeth!

Real vampires, found in Central and South America, are bats with sharp teeth.  They drink the blood of horses, cattle and other animals.

Although they have no real tie to Halloween, a vampire Halloween costume is one of the most popular classic costumes around.  My personal favorites are the Gothic vampire costume for men and the sexy vampire costume for women.
